GKrellMSS is a plugin for GKrellM2 that has a VU meter and a sound chart
that can toggle between an oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer mode.
There is a sensitivity adjustment. GKrellMSS uses esound, so it will only
display sound readings for sounds played through esound (for example with xmms)
